Amphiprioninae

There are over two dozen known species of anemonefish on the planet, and these are found almost exclusively in tropical waters. Their remarkable symbiotic living arrangements as well as their bizarre matriarchal social structure make them an intriguing subject for marine enthusiasts. These colourful fishes live nestled in the stinging tentacles of sea anemones which provides invaluable protection from predators. They remain impervious to the stinging nematocycts of their host due to their ability to generate a protective mucous coating over their bodies. Each anemone family consists of one dominant female who rules a handful of subordinate males. When the female passes on, the next largest male will turn into a female and take over her role.
